Quote: Simon and Garfunkel

“Kathy, I’m lost,” I said, though I knew she was sleeping.

Written by Paul Simon and released on their album Bookends, the song “America” is a mellow and simple song in free verse (of all things). The subsequent line is almost as good, but I feel the above does better alone. The context:

“ ‘Kathy, I’m lost,’ I said, though I knew she was sleeping. ‘I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why.’ ”

It’s one of my single favorite lines in music, though I don’t know why either. Haunting and the kind of thing you listen to on loop for hours. Just beautiful.
