Bartleby tells us that this was actually the motto that Ferdinand (of the Holy Roman Empire) adopted for his reign, which suggests to me that he was not a very fun guy. It’s from an earlier Latin line, “Fiat justitia ruat coelum” (Let justice be done, though heaven should fall) which is also cool and also grim.
I Do Not Agree with this philosophy, full stop. Do not perish, world. You are round and good to stand on.
